Newport began its season with our JV girls leading from the 5:40 PM tipoff at Bellevue High School until the final buzzer. First quarter scoring was sparse until freshman Katelyn Phung scored her first 5 Newport High School points. Ammana Karmali then took up the torch and figuratively torched the rest of the court with a flurry of transition layups culminating in a 14-point effort. Junior Varsity finished the game 44-27 and take a well-earned 1-0 start to the season.
Varsity Girls had their first tipoff at 7:15 PM on Wednesday night. A bout of the butterflies kept Newport’s scoreboard in check for the first quarter, giving the Wolverines a 16-10 lead after 1 quarter. The second quarter of the game had our Knights coming out with a tenacious full court pressure that Bellevue never quite solved. Coupled with freshman guard Portia Polo’s 11-point quarter, the Knights pulled ahead 28-22 by halftime, and the lead was never challenged again. Senior post Allie Harrison led all rebounders with 8 boards and junior guard Giannah Donahoe had a staggering 8 steals on the game.
