Coach Cuong Luu
Coach Cuong Luu started his coaching career at Newport in 2009. He began by coaching 5th grade select teams, and progressively continued player development for the following 4 years. In 2013 Cuong accepted the position of Junior Varsity head coach at Newport High School. For the following 6 years, Coach Luu served the program in various capacities including JV head coach, JV assistant coach, and Varsity assistant coach. 2019 marks Coach Luu’s first season as the Newport High School girls head Varsity coach.
“It is my hope to continue the strong tradition of women’s basketball at Newport High School, started by my friends Travis and Kris Whitaker some 20 years ago. I hope to help this community’s young women reach their athletic and personal goals through involvement in a program designed to support them and build their self-confidence. I am a firm believer in the amazing skills and character that is developed by team sports, and hope to establish a culture of empowerment and growth through basketball’s successes and challenges.”
Coach Luu attended Whitman College from 1999 – 2003 where he earned a Bacherlor of Arts degree. Basketball is a lifelong pursuit for Coach Luu, and he continues to actively play the game, as well as coach and develop players through whatever avenues and programs are provided to him. He lives in Kirkland Washington, and has a young daughter Quinn who is 6.
Coach Diago Hunter
Diago comes to us from the Tacoma area where he previously coached at the Pacific Christian Academy and is the Executive Director of the Tacoma Shine Youth Athletics Program.
TSYA has developed after school/summer mentor camps and high level sports teams that has helped Pierce County youth compete on the next level. Tacoma Shine developed the Leg Up program to help Pierce County high school athletes prepare for ACT and PSAT testing.
Coach Amber Parker
Coach Amber Parker is a Newport High alumni who graduated in 2015. She started playing basketball at a young age and joined the Newport Select program in the fifth grade. She continued to play for JV and Varsity for Newport High School. Her senior year Coach Cuong Luu was one of her coaches. This is her first year as an assistant coach. She recently graduated from the University of Washington with a bachelor’s degree in education.
“I am really excited for the opportunity to be involved in a program that I grew up in. I know from my own experience the amazing support and community this program offers. Basketball is one of my loves and passions and I hope to help the young women in this program to continue to love the sport and become the best they can be.”
